The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines through the Bureau of Trademarks (“BOT”) seeks to adopt and promulgate Rules and Regulations on Geographical Indications (“Draft GI-RR”) and schedule of fees, publication and issuance of certificate of GI registration (“Schedule of GI Fees”).
The Draft GI-RR is in pursuance of the mandate of the provisions of Republic Act No. 8293, otherwise known as the “Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines” (“IP Code”). It may be noted that the IP Code provides that GI is one of the intellectual property rights (Section 4.1 (c)), IP Code) and mandates the BOT to search and examine the applications for the registration of GI and the issuance of certificates of registration (Sections 5 (b) and 9.1, ibid.).
To afford the stakeholders the opportunity to air their views, provide inputs and express their concerns, if any, the BOT shall hold public consultations on the matter and shall encourage the submission of comments on the Draft GI-RR and proposed Schedule of GI Fees.
In this regard, all stakeholders and interested parties are invited to attend/participate in the public consultations on the Draft GI-RR and proposed Schedule of GI Fees to be held at the IPOPHIL Multi-Purpose Hall on December 13, 2013, Friday, 1:00pm-3:00pm.
