NATIONWIDE ESSAY WRITING CONTEST

On the first World IP Day, April 26, 2001, IPOPhil, with the support of the Intellectual Property Association of the Philippines (IPAP), the Intellectual Property Foundation (IPF), and the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, Inc. (FILSCAP), launched the Nationwide Essay Writing Contest with the theme "What Does Intellectual Property Mean To You In Your Daily Life?" The Contest aimed to increase the level of awareness on intellectual property rights among the Filipino youth. Cash prizes and plaques of appreciation were awarded to seven creative writers whose essays were deposited at the National Library which issued Certificates of Deposit and Registration. Aside from the 3 winning entries from the college/university level (tertiary), 4 more entries from the finalist list, making a total of 7 works, were officially endorsed by IPOPhil to the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva, Switzerland for the International Essay Writing Contest.

In 2002, with the theme "What Does Intellectual Property Mean To Our National Development", the Contest, now on its second year, produced a total of seven winners (2 from the elementary level, 2 from the high school level and 3 from the tertiary level). This time the Contest's objective was to encourage the youth to regard themselves as potential IP creators and view creations from intellectual property as a tool for national development.

Using the theme "Intellectual Property: Breaking Barriers, Creating Challenges and Opportunities", students from as far north as Cagayan in Region II and a far south as Sulo in Region XIII wrote and sent their essays to the IPOPhil to participate in the 3rd Nationwide Essay Writing Contest. 5 gifted and talented students were awarded their prizes and plaques in a ceremony on October 30, 2003.

For the year 2004, the Contest aimed to impress among the Filipinos, especially the youth, the significance to economic development of creative, inventive, and innovative citizens. Thus, to celebrate creativity, IPO adopted the theme: "Creativity: the World's Natural Resource". It gathered a total of 378 essay entries from different regions of the country, where 1 from elementary level; 2 each from high school and college levels were given due recognition for their creative works.
