IPOPHL unveils newly enhanced analytics platform, dives deeper into 4IR
September 24, 2021
The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) is one of the leading government agencies taking the Philippines into the realm of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). The agency proves this once again with its recent launch of the Business Intelligence (BI) v2.0 Online platform.
The newly released data visualization platform incorporates cutting edge machine learning/AI and advanced analytics features into its existing Big Data Infrastructure, which has intellectual property (IP) information collected from over 50 years.
“With the launch of our Business Intelligence v2.0 Online, IPOPHL expects a dramatic improvement in the agency’s evidence-based decision-making processes through the use of real-time data visualizations, the power of descriptive and predictive analytics, and, of course, actionable insights,” IPOPHL Director General Rowel S. Barba said.
A map showing the local distribution of Philippine IP assets is just one of the useful visualization tools created by the BI system.
He added that all the agency’s officials and key staff will now have access to a unified view of curated and trusted dashboards containing critical information on performance and operations.
“Transparency and efficiency, some of the core strengths of IPOPHL, are made even better. Indicators and metrics critical to IPOPHL’s goals and performance will practically be available at everyone’s fingertips, anytime and anywhere. This complements our continued dependence on remote work arrangements where we need to ensure the quick flow of data that help us make informed decisions for our innovators, creators and businesses,” Barba added.
The visual timeline provided by the BI v2.0 Online shows trademark filings over the years and major events in history and Philippine IP.
For now, the BI v2.0 Online platform is for internal use only but IPOPHL plans to publicly share select data visualizations in the near future to support the Open Data Philippines Initiative which gathers government data into a single platform for greater transparency, accessibility and understandability.
This future move is also in line with IPOPHL’s support for the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) initiative to help local government units monitor their constituents’ IP applications and/or assets, and allow them to strategize how to advance their position in the DTI’s City and Municipalities Competitive Index.
The system was implemented using Microsoft BI technology stack for the back-end and Tableau Online for the front-end and is securely hosted in the cloud. It was designed and developed with technical flexibility and sustainability in mind by utilizing the internal capabilities of IPOPHL’s Management Information Service led by the tandem of Director Vina Liza C. Cabrera and Assistant Director Charles A. Merioles.
It may be recalled that IPOPHL was one of the earliest government agencies to quickly transition its core services — from filing to registration — online as a strategic response to supporting community quarantines and social distancing measures due to COVID-19.
IPOPHL also launched its first mobile application, the IPOPHL Mobiliz, which showcases online support of IPOPHL’s core filing and monitoring services, including mapping features for finding the nearest IPOPHL offices near you, as well as for reporting and texting IP violations and other queries.
Today, the agency is embarking on a full digitalization goal of all its services to give stakeholders the best experience in protecting their IP assets.
