A geographical indication (GI) is any indication which identifies a good as originating in a territory, region or locality, where a given quality, reputation or other characteristic of the good is essentially attributable to its geographical origin and/or human factors.
Types of Geographical Indications:
- Agricultural Products
- Foodstuffs
- Wines
- Spirits
- Textile/Clothing
- Handicrafts
- Industrial Products
A GI registration provides protection for goods with unique quality, characteristics and reputation attributable to its geographical origin and/or human factor.
A GI registration prevents third parties from using means to mislead the public as to the geographical origin of the goods.
Promoting GI protection also paves the way for a strong consumer confidence as it preserves product quality, a driving force to strengthen competitive advantage, enhance market access and increase revenue generation.
- Rule 10, Article IV of the Rules and Regulations on Geographical Indications (IPOPHL Memorandum Circular No. 2022-022) mandates the requirements for GI registration.
- Rule 18, Article VII of the same Rules also prescribes the grounds for refusal of a GI application.

A registered GI is protected for an unlimited term until or unless revoked with finality.
