The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), in partnership with the Korea Copyright Commission (KCC) and the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism (MCST) held the Korea-Philippines Copyright Workshop 2017 last 13 June at the Conrad Hotel Taft Hall in Metro Manila. It is the 6th in a series of yearly activities co-conducted by IPOPHL, KCC, and MCST.

To give life to this year’s theme “Copyright Reform to Leap towards Copyright Leadership”, Director General Santiago urged that such reforms be situated in the larger context of a National Intellectual Property Strategy, which is IPOPHL’s response to its recognition of the importance of shifting to an industrialized society in the midst of the burgeoning Fourth Industrial revolution.

Speakers and over 30 participants from both Korean and Philippine public and private sectors attended the workshop. Mr. Hong Seung Kee, KCC Commissioner, and IPOPHL Deputy Director General Atty. Allan B. Gepty both showed the current statuses and future directions of the copyright regimes in Korea and the Philippines, respectively. Atty. Anselmo Adriano, Chairman of the Optical Media Board, related copyright protection and sustainability in relation to the Optical Media Act of 2003. Mr. Ryu Ki Sun, vice president of Copyright Overseas Promotion Association, from the Korean contents industry sector, discussed copyright infringement countermeasure and industrial development as part of a self-adaptation system in the private sector.

Themes for the past three years featured “Building Copyright Protection Infrastructure in the Digital Environment” (2016), “Fair Use of Copyrighted Works in the Digital Era” (2015), and “Development of Cultural Content in Copyright Systems” (2014), “Development in Digital Contents Industries and Copyright Protection” (2012).
