IPOPHL invites artists to join free workshops at the 2nd Philippine International Copyright Summit

October 21, 2024

As the much-awaited 2nd Philippine International Copyright Summit opens today, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) has called on participants to join its free creative workshops and talks, scheduled throughout the five-day (PICS) happening next week.

The workshops cover paper cutting, songwriting, dancing, storytelling, photography, watercolor painting and miniature art and will take place from October 21-25, 2024 at the Novotel Manila Araneta City.

The activities are part of the 2nd PICS, the country’s biggest copyright event organized by IPOPHL’s Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights. With the theme “Unlocking the Future: Tech Trends and Challenges in Copyright,” the 2nd PICS will explore the convergence of copyright law and technological advancements, including artificial intelligence and how these developments are shaping the creative industries in the Philippines and beyond.

Kicking off the creative workshops on the first day (Oct. 21, Monday) the renowned founder of the Paper Cutters Guild of the Philippines, Badz Magsumbol, will lead an intricate paper cutting workshop. Here, participants can learn essential cutting techniques and push their imagination as they transform simple paper into works of art.

To find your soul through song, Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Vice-President Rodolfo “Tito” Cayamanda, Jr. will teach participants on the second day (Oct. 22, Tuesday) to develop original song compositions, from crafting captivating melodies to writing lyrics that speak to the heart.

On the same day, PICS participants could also step into the rhythm with Choreographer and Professional Dancer Karl Francis L. Moreno who will lead a session on exploring creative expression beyond words and through movement, from fluid motions to bold choreography.

The fun continues on the fourth day (Oct. 24, Thursday) when the rest of the workshops are to be held.

Storyteller Teacher Mary Melody-Remorca will lead the storytelling workshop to show how to share and structure stories in a way that captivates hearts.

For photography, Assistant Division Chief of the BCRR’s Accreditation and Standards Division Exequiel Valerio will share basic photography tips on framing, lighting and finding the perfect shot.

Participants for the watercolor painting will also be able to interact with Artist Welfare Project, Inc. (AWPI) Executive Director Jennifer Lee-Bonto who will provide basics in creating pigments, layering colors and blending, along with showcasing different types of brush strokes.

Meanwhile, Miniature Artist Nhoda Munoz will immerse participants in the whimsical world of miniature art where creations fit right into the palm of their hands—inviting them to play, admire the details and draw inspiration from the tiny masterpieces.

“Whether you’re honing your talent, broadening your skill sets, or discovering a new artistic passion, these short workshops will offer an enjoyable and adventurous experience perfect for any curious creative soul,” said IPOPHL’s Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights Director Emerson G. Cuyo.

To join, artists must simply register to the PICS for the day their chosen activity is scheduled. Materials will be provided and reservation for the limited slots for each workshop will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations can be made in the registration area early on the day of the workshop.
