IPOPHL to host 2nd Philippine International Copyright Summit exploring convergence of copyright law and tech advancements

July 31, 2024

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) recently revealed that its much-awaited 2nd Philippine International Copyright Summit (PICS) is set to take place this October, the event aiming to shed light on the intersections between copyright law and emerging digital technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI).

Led by the Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights (BCRR), the event will bring together creatives, technology experts, policymakers and other stakeholders to paint a picture on how the copyright landscape is adapting to challenges and embracing opportunities presented by digital innovation. It will also dive into the experiences of other countries, particularly how they are reevaluating their copyright laws to keep in step with the accelerating innovation landscape.

“As digital technologies continue to advance at a breakneck speed, it is crucial for copyright law to evolve in tandem so that the Philippines does not miss opportunities and face digital challenges with greater certainty on how we can protect artists’ works effectively,” IPOPHL Director General (DG) Rowel S. Barba said.

“The 2nd PICS will serve as a vital platform for fostering dialogue and collaboration among key stakeholders, ensuring that copyright protections remain robust and relevant in the face of technological progress,” Barba added during a media briefing on Tuesday.

At the briefing, the BCRR gave a teaser on what to expect from the event, such as in-depth panels and discussions, workshops on digital rights management and copyright enforcement, insights from international experts on global best practices in copyright management, face-to-face consultations with the BCRR and opportunities for networking with leading experts in the various creative, technology and IP industries.

Key topics will center on the ramifications of AI on copyright protection and enforcement, the impact of digital distribution on creative industries and regulatory strategies for balancing the rights of creators with the demands of a tech-driven world.

“Attendees will have the opportunity to gain valuable insights into current trends, share their experiences that can help shape future policies and explore practical solutions for navigating the evolving digital environment,” BCRR Director Emerson G. Cuyo said.

The PICS will be held in collaboration with various key partners of IPOPHL, such as the the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the local government unit of Quezon City, the various accredited collective management organizations, IP Offices within the region, schools and universities, various creative industry associations and other relevant government offices. The BCRR is also partnering with the Artists’ Welfare Project, Inc. for a fun run kick-off event in October called ARTISTakbo.

Similar to the success of the first PICS in November 2021, the second round of the summit is expected to attract a large and diverse audience, including legal professionals, technology experts, academics and representatives from creative industries. # # # (Janina Information Officer III)
