IPOPHL to level up local animation, game development industries thru combo support
March 4, 2020
The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) has joined forces with the Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. (ACPI), Creative Content Creators Association of the Philippines, Inc. (SIKAP), and the Game Developers Association of the Philippines (GDAP) to boost their members' capacities in copyright management and fully assist the groups as they explore the viability of being accredited collective management organizations.
To make official their collaboration, IPOPHL Director General Rowel S. Barba; ACPI’s President Miguel Del Rosario and Executive Director Rene B. Misa; SIKAP Acting President and Co-Founder Miguel Matthew Del Mundo; and GDAP’s President Alvin Juban and Executive Director Ria Lu signed a memorandum of understanding last Tuesday, February 24, 2020.
The MoU opens opportunities for deeper participation in capacity-building through copyright management seminars and industry development forums; in conducting comprehensive, industry-specific research on best practices and policies in Southeast Asia that the Philippines can emulate; and in sharing relevant information, insights, and materials that can lead to an effective identification of programs, projects and efforts, as well as their alignment and convergence, for the benefit of the industry, among others.
Besides delivering coordinated capacity-building efforts, the MoU signifies their commitment to work hand in hand in supporting each other’s programs, projects, campaigns, and events aimed at raising public awareness and appreciation of the value of copyright to their industries' growth.
As such, IPOPHL will be a partner in ensuring the success of ACPI's Animahenasyon, an annual five-day festival that showcases Filipino talent in animation and gathers over 3,000 participants all over the country. In turn, all three industry-groups will likewise participate and promote IPOPHL's first-ever International Copyright Summit, tentatively scheduled in November 2020.
The first Philippine International Copyright Summit will be a gathering of all stakeholders in the copyright-based sector to discuss the subject of copyright and other current issues and concerns in the various industries comprising the sector. The event will not only enable stakeholders in one particular industry to be acquainted with their counterparts in other copyright-based industries but will also serve as a showcase of the developments and collaborative efforts that have been achieved up to that point, including those arising from the MoUs that have just been inked.
